If you have some extra time at the Lodge and you would like to learn more about local culture or coffee farming on the slopes of Mount Meru, let us organize a Culture tour in the surrounding villages or a visit to a neighboring Coffee Plantation. The Arusha national Park is less than an hour away and we can organize hiking, game watching for those on extended stay. For adventurers we also offer three day Mount Meru treks.

Large animals including giraffe, hippo, buffalo and elephant and be seen as well as water buck, reed buck, bush buck, red duiker and suni antelopes. Over 500 species of birds are recorded in the area. The varied habitat also supports a great variety of butterflies including, swallowtail and monarch species. Mount Meru at 4,568m (15,000 feet) is Africa’s fourth highest mountain and a relatively young volcano. Arusha National Park is situated on the slopes of Meru is only half an hour drive from our lodge, and it has the widest floral diversity in Tanzania – from grassland through montane forest to heath and alpine desert as well as both soda and fresh water lakes.We can organise full day game drives through Arusha National Park combined with shorter walks on Mount Meru towards the ash cone in the crater where you can observe wildlife in the mystical forest and lake habitats.

MMount Meru makes an idyllic setting for a trek with spectacular scenary and wildlife. The trek starts from the lodge and ascends through banana and coffee plantations and forest. A ranger will guide you to the crater floor at 8,000 feet and, on a three day expedition, along the rim of the crater to the peak at 15,000 feet at which point there is a 7000 foot cliff dropping to the crater floor and in clear weather superb views to Kilimanjaro over the plains 10,000 feet below.

Most of our staff come from Jua Kali and other villages surrounding Ngare Sero Mountain Lodge. Originally the Wameru tribe inhabited the slopes of Mount Meru. They practices intensive agro-forestry and livestock keeping. Let one of our staff walk you through the lush villages, show you their homes, local primary and secondary schools, and a little orphanage in the vicinity of Ngare Sero forest.


 

$5 per person for up to 2 hours walk guided by our staff member

Let us arrange a two hour tour of a neighbouring coffee farm. You will be guided on a beautiful walk around the coffee plantation, learn about coffee processing at the factory and enjoy a fresh cup of coffee with cakes of choice. Return home with some fresh roasted Mount Meru supreme coffee.
